Uncorrected alignment problems in your dentition can do more than simply leave you with an unappealing smile. In time the unnatural angle that your teeth meet at can cause an area of tooth enamel to gradually wear away. If the dental attrition isn’t treated, the tooth could be at increased risk of suffering a severe cavity or dental fracture.
Sometimes a small area of dental attrition can be repaired by a simple dental filling applied at Dr. Alan Stein’s dental office. Unfortunately, if tooth decay has invaded the area or a significant amount of tooth enamel has been compromised, Dr. Alan Stein might recommend restoring the tooth with a dental crown.
Dr. Alan Stein will start the treatment process by using a drill to remove the entire tooth enamel layer. This leaves behind a small post or dentin which is known as an abutment. Later it will serve to anchor your new dental crown in your mouth.
Dr. Alan Stein’s technicians will then prepare a detailed impression of the abutment and the surrounding teeth before securing a temporary crown in place. The impression will then be sent to a dental lab where your dental crown will be created from either gold, base metals, or dental-grade porcelain.
After cementing the dental crown in place, Dr. Alan Stein will examine its relationship to the other teeth in your dentition. If necessary, he might make some minor edits to the dental crown or the tooth that initially caused the dental attrition.
